The message that 1984 by George Orwell and Little Brother by Cory Doctorow seem to emphasize above all others is the one that America has failed to heed: how to trust.

Americans have not learned how to be skeptical of whom they trust by trusting the government too greatly and not respecting their human limits. Nor have they learned how to maintain a level of trust among humans by not trusting fellow countrymen, fellow human beings, or even the people they govern. All this has sent them on a fast moving path to a future of overwhelming technology that monitors all constantly, where government chases secrecy into oblivion.
